Tape Sync FAQ
What is a Tape Sync?
Many radio, podcast, and even television interviews are conducted by telephone. While this is convenient for both hosts and guests, the recordings sound as though the guests are…well, on the phone, and in the case of video, all you get is a non-talking head at best. To increase the audio quality of an interview or to add live video, producers will often try to find someone who can go to the guest's location and record high-quality audio or video, which can then be used to replace the telephone-quality track in post production. This is called a tape sync, double ender, or simul-rec. It is particularly common in worldwide public radio, and with the explosion of semi-pro video, we think it will become increasingly popular in video/television as well.
What is the Role of PodCorps.org?
PodCorps.org is a matchmaking service, providing a method for producers to find audio and video engineers to record tape syncs and live events in locations all over the world. Stringers who are available for tape syncs have indicated so in their PodCorps.org profiles.

How Can I Learn More About Tape Syncs?
Robin White wrote a very good article entitled Tape Syncs: What Are the Expectations? on the AIR web site. The article discusses both the technical and business issues for those who record remote interviews for others. AIR (the Association of Independents in Radio) is an excellent organization with over 600 members.
How Much Should I Pay/Charge for a Tape Sync?
Public-radio professionals in the U.S. are typically paid $100 to $200 plus travel expenses to record a tape sync. These stringers typically have extensive experience in audio and have high-quality recorders and microphones. On the other hand, many podcasting and videoblogger stringers make do with less sophisticated gear and often trade tape-sync favors with other podcasters/videobloggers at no charge. All stringers, volunteer through professional, are welcome here at PodCorps.org.
